Devon v Cornwall at Cornwood CC

Sunday 7th May 2023

NCCA T20 Competition (Game 1 of 2 on the day)

Devon 123 All Out: Full 20 Overs *Batted 1st

Cornwall 127-7: 19.4 Overs (Won with 2 balls to spare)

Start time 11am. Only just made it. Took the wrong turning off the A38 and got lost in Ivybridge. Eventually found the ground after traversing the narrow lanes of South Devon. Ridiculous driving.

Weather: Its been a chilly start to May in the South West but today was a little more comfortable. Mainly cloudy with a fleeting glimpse of the sun, not quite the Seville Scorchio the Mystic Meg local forecasters had been touting.

Attendance: Around the 80 to 100 mark whilst I was at the ground. Quite a few from Cornwall made the trip.

Match Rating: 9/10 Nip and tuck all the way through. Extremely competitive cricket. The body language emphasised how much both sides wanted it. Good quality batting and bowling. Went to the very last over, great stuff.

Grub Menu: Cheese salad sandwiches adorned with that nice Chilli Jam, Melton Mowbray Pork Pie plus some Cheese & Onion crisps from Tesco. Also brought a flask of coffee for this one.

Bring Your Own Chair Necessity? Could've possibly got by without the trusty chair at the Cornwood Ground, they do have quite a few nice benches dotted around the perimeter. The club also put some comfy padded chairs out of the Clubhouse at the side of the pitch adjacent to the Pavilion (which proved very popular with the early doors spectators).

General Facilities and Viewing: Cornwood is a scenic Devon village and the cricket ground compliments it superbly. The splendid Pavilion/Clubhouse proudly oversees the slightly sloping pitch as it ebbs towards rustic green woodland. I was impressed with the catering provisions the club had put on for the day, not just for players, officials and VIP's either, there was all kinds of food goodies available to purchase. There is also a well designed bar and full toilet facilities. They have a digital scoreboard with a second cricket pitch spanning out behind it beside the net practice area.

Competition Mention: Cornwall went on to win the second game of the day as well, rather convincingly I'm informed. This has gained them a privileged place in the National Counties Cricket Association T20 Finals Day at Tring Park CC Hertfordshire on Sunday 21st May (first Semi Final 10am start, admission for the full day £9.50, under 16's free). Good luck to Cornwall for the Cup.
